3 Reasons why your bodyweight changes so much...


So you're sticking to your new year's resolutions (we'll see how long that lasts I'm already head first in ice cream) the weight is shifting nicely because the scales say so.  

You get up every morning and the first thing you do after you've emptied your bowels (sorry) is cross your fingers toes and soul and hope that the numbers are going down on the scale.  Each day you're winning, the numbers are going down so surely you're doing something right? 

But what happens when one day you wake up and the weight has gone up?! you curse inexplicbily stomp up and down like a child and throw your scales against the framed Harry Styles picture on your wall (is that just me?)  

It seems to be programmed within our DNA that what the scales say is the most defining factor for weight loss (the term should be fat loss not weight loss) we see it on magazines, T.V the media (cough Daily Fail) and we're made to believe that the way we look and feel should be dictated by a number.  

The scales do have their place (mainly at the bottom of your bin) however they should never be the sole focus on your fat loss journey. 

There are plenty more than 3 reasons but I only have a certain amount of time before you bore of this post and go back to scrolling through the gram.  So let's make the most of it shall we.....

1. Salt intake

Salt retains up to 50 times it's weight in water! 

So let's say one night you pick up a bag of chips from your local fish and chippy and douse those chips in salt.  Then the next day you have a meal that's very low in sodium.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that your weight is going to be influenced by the first meal.  Another factor to consider when presenting the scales with your middle finger.


2. That Time Of The Month

Ladies your bodyweight can fluctuate anywhere between 1 and 5 pounds during your cycle!! the menstrual cycle uses up a shed load of energy! so don't get into a panic! these weight fluctuations are perfectly normal. 

If you're meticulously following your calories and doing everything to the T and can't work out for the life of you why you've put on 5 pounds please take the menstrual cycle into consideration! 

This is where we see people taking drastic measures and reducing their calories even more so.  Falling into a perpetual painstaking cycle (don't fret ladies!)

3. Stress!

Stress is often overlooked when it comes to our fat loss journey.  Let's say you're anxious a lot of the time, you're not really eating and your resting metabolic rate is always high.  This is going to be a serious variable in your journey.

When you stress your body releases adrenaline and cortisol.  Cortisol helps your body respond to danger and stress.  Often this can lead to unwanted weight gain and could be another factor as to why those scales are jumping left right and bloody centre. 


There are a plethora of other reasons as to why your bodyweight changes so much on a day to day basis so stop stressing about the little things.  If you're someone who obsesses over the scales changing every day; throw them out now.  You're never going to be happy, a time will come when the numbers stop changing.
