Are You Eating Too Much Fruit?
We've been told since we were children to load up on fruit. Fruit is packed with nutrients and they're naturally low in calories and fat so it seems a no brainer right....
Some eat fruit until they're blue in the face whilst others stay away from it due to it's carb content (I know madness!!)
I came across this headline from the Daily Fail "HOW TOO MUCH FRUIT CAN MAKE YOU FAT" of course too much of anything can make you fat, silly billy's :) A surplus of calories will lead to weight gain it's as simple as that.
But it did get me thinking; are you eating too much fruit and treating it as a free food? I say to my clients "veg is a free food" eat as much of it as you want. But I wouldn't say that about fruit.
Somewhere along the lines the government "servings" of fruit has been slightly misconstrued. Your vegetables need to be part of that 5-8 servings a day, not just 8 oranges!
Fruit is by far a better option than coming home slumping onto the sofa and going through half a tub of Ben & Jerry's. I'm definitely not singling fruit out!
However if you're struggling to lose weight you may simply be consuming more carbohydrates than you think.
Just to give you an example a banana has 24g of carbs whilst a small slice of bread contains 14g carbs.
It's very easy to point the finger at crisps, bread and sweets but what if you're overhauling on fruit? calories matter be they from apples or mars bars.
Uh oh here come the haters! "my grass, beetroot berry smoothie is full of goodness" i'm not doubting that for a minute, but what I am doubting is that fact that you have no idea how much sugar they contain. Let's have a look at innocent smoothies as an example.
Innocent smoothie- not so innocent after all! this little 250ml bottle contains 34g of sugar, that's the same sugar content as 3.5 Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
Don't be fooled by "health juices & smoothies" I'm definitely not demonising fruits, just be conscious of your overall daily consumption. 2-4 servings a day is plenty.
